2018 Western New England Mens NRTTop seeds and defending APTA National Champions John Hughes and Marc Powers successfully defended their 2017 title by taking the Western New England Championships contested in Longmeadow, MA on December 15. The winners took the measure of the second seeds, Juan Arraya and Max Le Pivert, in the final, 6-1, 6-3.

For Powers and Hughes the day’s “moment of truth” appeared at 4-4 in their third set of a quarterfinal match against Anton Bobytski and Nathan LeFevre.  The defending champs were up to the task as they took the final two games to earn a trip to the semifinals by the scores of 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, to the delight of the patrons at Hughes’ home club, Field Club of Longmeadow.  Their semifinal opponents were the estimable Johan du Randt and new partner Admire Mushonga, who was making his first tournament appearance here. Du Randt and Mushonga had taken out the third seeds, Sebastian Bredberg and Jeff Morneau,  in an entertaining quarterfinal dominated by du Randt’s foot speed and creativity. Hughes and Powers took control from the start and were able to post a win in two fast-paced sets.  Despite some dangerous unseeded teams in the lower half, results there followed form as Arraya/Le Pivert met and bested fourth seeds Marco Grangeiro and George Wilkinson in their semifinal.

Back draw winners included Jeremy Court and David Goldberg (who had tested Bobytski and LeFevre in the second round), victors in the Reprieve and Consolation winners Xavier Proulx and partner Adrians Zguns.  Morneau and Bredberg captured the Quarterfinal Reprieve over Andrea Bonfigli and Anton Protsenko while consolation reprieve honors went to Nikola Bubnic and Christo Schultz, who triumphed over Cary Greenberg and Mike Roselli.

Special recognition goes to first year tournament director Per Nilsson and his army of hut commanders and volunteers, including chief information technologist Steve McKenna who kept tournament results flowing flawlessly between the four tournament venues. Nilsson will perhaps be nominated for the “Willard Scott Award” for his confident and accurate weather forecasting leading up to the tournament. Light morning rain soon gave way to cool temperatures and overcast skies for the balance of the day, ideal playing conditions.  As always, in this 28th year of the tournament, players and spectators enjoyed a variety of food and beverages throughout a long day of platform.
