The 2012 APTA Women's 70+ Nationals was a huge success yesterday, November 14th, at Fox Meadow Tennis Club.
Although the draw was just eight teams, it was a very strong draw of highly capable 70+ year old women, and an eight-team group that would have very likely been alive in the quarter-final round of a larger draw.
The winners were Helen Garrett and Sandy Simmers, winning 7-5, 6-4 over the #2 seeds, Ginny Sniatkowski and Thelma Huber in a very well played final match. Garrett/Simmers defeated the #1 seeds, Birgit Maio/Gail Reifsnyder in the semis,6-2, 6-0.
The weather was perfect paddle weather, and the tournament went off without a hitch. As always, the players were delighted to once again come to Fox Meadow, the Home of Platform Tennis, for a National Championship, and many commented on the usual pleasant atmosphere at Fox Meadow, the historical connections to the game, and the warm hospitality of the host committee.
