Region I Men’s President’s Cup Rules and Guidelines for Qualification

Updated December, 2009 by Tim Mangan, President and Captain of Region 1

To qualify for play in the Presidents Cup competition during the APTA Nationals event, the following set of qualifications must be followed:

  • There are five (5) roster spots for competition in the President’s Cup. Only four (4) of these spots are eligible for qualification. The final roster spot will be filled by the Region 1 President as the “Captain's Pick.” The two subs will also be captain’s picks.

  • The four (4) teams with the highest point total for three (3) Region 1 Tournaments will qualify. However, if one of the four (4) qualifying teams loses a partner for any reason, then the remaining team member will remain eligible as an individual with qualifying points. If this individual is partnered with another individual within Region 1, and their point total is among the top four (4) qualifying spots, they will be eligible.

  • Teams will choose the best three (3) Region 1 tournaments to reach their highest point total.

  • Point totals will be determined by the American Platform Tennis Association’s system of strength of tournament multiplied by points earned by play in the tournament.

  • The four (4) teams that have qualified with the most points will be given first consideration. If there is an individual who has qualified with his partner from Region 1, but his partner is unable to play, then the next highest ranked individual (per the APTA rankings after Short Hills) (that has not qualified in the top four), playing with or without a partner from Region 1, will become the next qualified player to play with the ranked individual. This team of two (2) ranked individuals will not be considered a captain's pick, but will have qualified as one of the four (4) teams as per the rules stated above.

  • All players participating in the President’s Cup competition must also participate in the APTA Nationals event as well, although they are not required to play in the APTA Nationals with the same partner as in President's Cup competition.

  • Each player who has qualified and been chosen to represent Region 1 will do so in a nature that is in good sportsmanship and representative of team play.

  • Each shall also abide by the Etiquette of Platform Tennis set forth in the Addendum to the APTA rules.

  • Each player shall abide by all Official Rules of Platform Tennis set forth by the APTA in addition to any Rules corresponding to President’s Cup play.

Region I Women’s President’s Cup

Eligibility:

  • Teams must play either Orange Lawn PCQ or Jane Fleming PCQ. Of course, players are encouraged to play both and thereby acquire more points.
  • Teams must play one NRT in region 1: Long Island Invitational, Atlantic and/or Short Hills. This will also help to encourage participation in the Long Island and Atlantic tournaments.

Point System:

  • The top 8 regional teams in the PCQs get points.
  • For the NRT events, out of region participants are removed, points are given to the top finishing 1-16 teams.
  • Points assigned for the NRTs will be weighted according to the strength of the draw as determined by the APTA ranking chair. There are four categories, and the strength is determined by the number of top ranked teams participating.
  • Players from Region 1 who are ranked nationally in the top 8 are not eligible for P-Cup play.

Point Values:

  • Champions: 26 pts (13 per individual)
  • Finalists: 20 pts (10 per individual)
  • Semis: 16 pts (8 per individual)
  • Quarter 5th and 6th: 12 pts (6 per individual)
  • Quarter 7th and 8th: 10 pts (5 per individual)
  • 9-12: 6 pts (3 per individual)
  • 13-16: 2 pts (1 per individual)

Assembling the Team:

  • Points will be published after OLTC, JF and Short Hills.
  • Points are awarded to the team and to the individual player.
  • A team must play a minimum of two tournaments to qualify for President's Cup play. If a team competes in more than two events, their two best finishes will count.
  • The top four teams will automatically earn a spot on the team.
  • Position 5 will be filled with two of the highest ranked individuals willing to play who have not qualified with a partner. Position 5 is a captain's pick.
  • In the event that any of the top 4 teams choose not to play, the next highest ranked team qualifies.
  • Failing the availability of an eligible team, the position then becomes a captain's pick (factors to include points, number of tournaments played and number of tournaments played in Region 1.)
  • The final two alternate spots will be captain's pick based on the factors stated above.

Captain:

  • The captainship will rotate every five years between NY and NJ, with the fifth year being a transitional year in which the outgoing captain will co-captian with the incoming captain.  The captain of the Women's Presidents Cup is chosen by the Region 1 President.
