Clair Joyce and Curt Corrigan Repeat at Colorado Mixed
January 22, 2014
The 2014 Colorado State Mixed Doubles Open, hosted by Arapahoe Tennis Club in Denver, had the best turnout ever! With 33 teams total, 19 in the "B" bracket and 14 in the "A", tournament director Cary Hodges was a little worried that the event might have to be continued on Sunday. However, thanks to the help from two off-site courts, the load became more manageable with the "A" final going on just after dusk.
Earlier in the day, the hotly contested "B" bracket saw some phenomenal matches. Eventual champs, Amy List and Kent Lemon, barely survived their quarterfinal matchup with Sandy Macartney and Greg Wheeler, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6. List and Lemon were able to get through the semifinals in straight sets over their good buddies Kristi and Craig Emerson, but had to grind through another three-setter in the final against Wendy Fryer and Scott Ripley, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Fryer and Ripley had upset the top-seeded Brooke and John Moore in the semis, 6-4, 7-5.
As the "B" bracket finished up, the "A" main draw hit the courts with the quarterfinals already established after first round matches had been played the night before. With some new pairs as well as two out-of-town teams, the nervous energy was certainly evident. 2013 champions, Claire Joyce and Curt Corrigan, got off to a good start by defeating the mother/son team of Susan and Jay Schwab, 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded team from Bozeman, Montana, Carolyn Gorski and Rick Remitz, had their hands full with the newly-created team of Kathy Givan and Andrew Green, who showed a well-balanced game of defense and offense, winning a tight two-setter, 6-4, 7-5. In the lower half of the bracket, Kathleen Parker and Matt Kranich were in a serious grudge match with Anne Koo and Dan Washburne, while the second seed, Winslow Waxter and Cary Hodges duked it out with heavy hitters Sarah Shore and Randy Swenson. The semis saw Joyce and Corrigan set to play Givan and Green while the other semi pitted Parker and Kranich versus Waxter and Hodges. Both matches could be summed up in two words: experience rules
The final was controlled from start to finish with Joyce lobbing flawlessly and Corrigan hitting the drive just at the right moment. Joyce and Corrigan took the title, 6-3, 6-2.
The weekend was a fantastic one for Colorado paddle lovers who also were given one more important victory by our local gridiron professionals....GO BRONCOS!!!
