The Greater Boston Women’s Open was a huge success. We had our largest draw ever, with new faces, great competition, fabulous camaraderie and juicy hut chatter. It was capped off with a great final. Susan Rudd and Wendy Yang succumbed to Jessie Glidden and Amy Stiga, 6-4 in the third. It was a match of smiles, speed, placement and rock star shots.
The consolation final was a battle of "who can outlast who?" Judy Bramhall and Tory Morton defeated Carter Everitt and Meredith Stravato 7-6 in the third. These ladies started the first of their 5 matches at 8:30 a.m. and were not done until 8:30 p.m. Bravo!
The quarter reprieve was won by Barb Bettigole and Sally Hughes who beat Jill Tryon and Courtia Worth. The consolation reprieve was won by Joan O'Connor and Mary Hutchinson who defeated newcomers Jill McCarthy and Paula Fazli.
I owe many thanks. Ann Knoblock was fabulous helping garner the courts (thank you Brae Burn, Wellesley and Weston) and balls. Without her we could not have played. Leslie Haskins stayed to the bitter end and helped clean the hut and brought all the recyclables home. The best was her email that night that said, "I lost all three matches but had the best day and sang Christmas carols the whole way home," You have to love the Region II attitude. Thank you Judy Helm for stepping in at the last minute as a hut commander. And to our enthusiastic newcomers to hut commanding Jim and Debbie Notman - reserve the second week in Dec. for next year, you're in! We almost made it though the day without a hitch; Sarah Driscoll we all hope your calf is mending well.
Now it is time to gear up for Kitty Palmer's Madison Open. The Madison courts have all been resurfaced and they have new lights, etc. They are ready for you all. Download the application from the tournament listing and sign up soon.
