ALLAN WITHAM PETERS (Former APTA Board Member)
Allan Witham Peters of Quogue died on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead following a long illness.He was 79.
Mr. Peters was born in East Orange, New Jersey and graduated from the Taft School in 1947 and Yale University in 1951.At Yale he was a member of the Wolfshead Society and was a varsity football player and star punter as well as a member of the rugby team.
He worked for Bankers Trust in New York City, then spent the rest of his career at Citibank, retiring as a first vice president.
Mr. Peters lived in Englewood, New Jersey and raised his family there.After his retirement, he moved to Quogue where he had spent his summers since the age of 16.
He was an avid tennis and paddle tennis player.He served as Treasurer and member of the APTA Board from 1970-1976.Fellow director, Bob Brown, recalls Allan as “an excellent, first class director, always ready for the task and quite dedicated to the APTA.”
He and his partner Bill DeSaussaure won the New Jersey States twice, unseeded, in 1965 and 1967.He passed on his love of paddle to his daughter, Connie Jones (winner of 11 National Championships) and a grandson Matthew Jones (winner of the under 10’s National Championship).
In addition to his wife, Ruth Peters, he is survived by a son, Douglas Peters, a daughter Constance Jones and four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Peconic Bay Medical Center, 1300 Roanoke Avenue, Riverhead, NY 11902 would be appreciated by the family.
