Women's Shore B Tournament
MARIA MANLEY MARCH 3, 2008 RUMSON, NEW JERSEY
Rumson, New Jersey was the site of the 2nd Annual Women’s Shore B tournament. Great weather, great competition, great favors (a beach towel in honor of the location) and great prizes (Viking bags). The competitors came from 4 states and the draw grew from 16 last year to 24 this year. Host club Navesink CC did a wonderful job with the lunch and John Milbank was on hand to offer assistance if needed. While competitive, all the matches were played in the spirit of good sportsmanship and fun. According to Tournament Director Maria Manley “All in all it was a nice day of paddle with your friends and I hope we can have it again next year!”
Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care Mixed Tournament
FEBRUARY 3, 2008 BRONXVILLE, NY
The Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care Mixed Platform Tennis Tournament was a huge success this year, raising more than $13,000 for The Jansen charity.
Forty-five teams from across Westchester (and beyond) participated As usual, though the competition was fierce, the camaraderie was superlative. The event took place on the brisk weekend of January 26 and 27 at several sites, including the Bronxville Village courts, Siwanoy Country Club, Bronxville Field Club, and Fox Meadow Tennis Club.
Tina Kelly and Gary Squires won the tournament in an exciting finals against Carrie Rabuse and Chris Magner (4-6, 7-5, 6-3). The Reprieve was won by Cammy McFadden and Michael McCann over Carolyn and Larry Bodkin. In the Consolation, Ann Manning and David Claiborne defeated Linda Finn and Jack VonMaur. Meanwhile, Robin Lucia and Dick Bower beat Barbara McGraw and Marcus Higgins in the Lucky Loser division.
Sugar Genereaux, a Bronxville native and member of the original Jansen staff, is the organizer of this popular event. Her tireless support is a testament to what volunteers can do to make a difference. With her considerable energy and the support of John Stoffel and many enthusiastic assistants, she organized more than 80 sponsors.
The silent auction at the Saturday night cocktail party offered something for everyone, including gift certificates to several restaurants, cases of fine wine, and fashions for the family. The hottest auction item was tickets to the U.S. Golf Open donated by the USGA. The real winner of this event was Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care who provide compassionate support and services to the terminally ill. For more information visit: http://www.jansenhospice.org .
