Clarke and Teglas Win Essex Men's B Tournament on Dec. 20th
Jamey Bruns, Essex Platform Tennis Club
December 21, 2008
Essex, CT
Last year, Don Clarke and Gordon Teglas came up short in the finals of the Essex (CT) Men's B Tournament. This year was a different story as they outlasted John Bauman and John Cunningham in the finals 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
However, before a ball could be struck or a match played, the courts needed to be cleared of snow. Friday's storm had deposited a significant amount of the white stuff on the Connecticut shoreline area. A crew of tournament players and club members cheerfully pitched in to get the job done.
There were some very tight matches played in the morning's early rounds. Eventual semifinalists Jay Fritz and Adam Winstanley took out Rich Goldfeder and Matt Rowe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round. Craig Leonard and Charlie Ulmer earned a tough 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-3 victory over Russ Burgess and Rob Coster in another tight first round matchup. In the quarters, Bill Dubois and Palmer Whitney eaked out a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Leonard and Ulmer.
The semifinals saw Clarke and Teglas eliminate DuBois and Whitney 6-4, 6-3. In the other semifinal matchup, Bauman and Cunningham slipped by Fritz and Winstanley 6-4, 6-2 to set up the final round matchup.
Michael Foye and Steve Godiksen took the Quarter Reprieve with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Leonard and Ulmer. The Consolation was won by Burgess and Coster. They defeated Barclay Douglas and Evan Smith 6-3, 6-3. And long after most people had left, Dan Corcoran and Mark McDonough persevered over Bill Halsey and Tom Riggio in the Consolation Reprieve. The scores in that match were 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped shovel snow and allowed the matches to be played pretty much on schedule. Thanks also to chef Dave Forrest of the The Oxford Academy for a delicious lunch.

December 10, 2008

Time is tight so you've got to act now. Three events remain before the Christmas holiday. Two are this weekend so email the respective tournament directors today if you want to play. Just click on the Tournament Director's name in the events outlined below and it will format an email to that person. Sorry for the short notice. I hope you play in these events.
I personally witnessed a great platform tennis event last Saturday. Jamey Burns ran the inaugural CT Shoreline Women's "B" tournament in Old Lyme, CT. 16 teams came from 5 different States to compete in the first women's "B" event anyone can remember in Region 2. Each and every team had such a great time, they have all committed to playing in the other two "B" events on the schedule this season. I hope more jump on board too. See below for results.
The Brae Burn "B" for men was held in West Newton, MA on the same day. Don Helm reported before the event he had to limit the draw this year. I haven't heard the results yet, but my bet is the "BBB" remained one of the best men's "B" events in the region.
Weather was a factor for the New England Women's 95+ at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, MA last Sunday. I'll have results for all these events including the ones this weekend in my next email to you
THE GREAT BOSTON WOMEN'S NRT & PCQ TOURNAMENT is this Saturday!
Draw will close very soon, so contact Charlotte Gilet today to play in this event. Brae Burn Country Club will host the event and The Country Club in Brookline has graciously offered their facilities as well. There were 6 or 7 teams in Old Lyme last Saturday that should be playing in this event. The best women is the area will be playing and most of you should be testing your skills against the best.
THE NEW ENGLAND MEN'S PCQ AT THE ESSEX COUNTRY CLUB is this Saturday!
A strong draw is expected but it will close very soon. Please contact Lennart Jonason today if you want to play. Like the women's event, the best men players in the area will be at this event. This is the perfect venue to test and hone your skills.
The Essex CT Shoreline Men's "B" Tournament on Saturday, December 20th
Tournament Director Jamey Burns reports that last year, he closed off the draw at 16 teams for the Men's event as a matter of convenience for scheduling purposes since he did not have access to that many courts. He ended up turning away teams. This year, he has more courts and 17 teams have signed up already. Jamey hopes to expand the tournament to 24 teams or more! Oxford Academy is providing locker room facilities once again and Chef Dave will be preparing our lunch. Email Jamey Burns today so that he and the Chef can plan accordingly.
Potter and Rosen Win CT Shoreline Women's Tournament
Essex Platform Tennis Club News
December 6, 2008
Essex, CT
Having driven the furthest distance to play in the tournament, it was only fitting that Leslie Potter and Laurie Rosen (Norwich, VT) had to go the limit before they could claim victory in the Connecticut Shoreline Women's B Tournament here on Saturday. They defeated Laurie Holl and Hilary Myers (West Hartford, CT) 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) in a match which saw its share of momentum shifts.
Earlier, Potter and Rosen had defeated Phyllis Kindelan and Simone Reynolds (New Britain, CT) 6-4, 6-3 in the semis. In the other semi final match, Holl and Myers had moved past Betsy Bergstrom and Barb Coster (Madison, CT) 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
The consolation final was also a three set affair. In that match, Barbara Horne (Scituate, MA) and Asa Nilsson (Longmeadow, MA) outlasted the mother-daughter team of Anne Foley (Madison, CT) and Kate McGetrick (Clinton, CT). The scores were 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The Quarter Reprieve went to Cynni Finn (Southwick, MA) and Leslie Haskins (Suffield, CT).
Sally Riggio and Sarah Whitney (Essex, CT) took the Consolation Reprieve.
Congratulations to all who participated in this inaugural event!

It looks like the weekend is going to be perfect for Platform Tennis. Please contact the respective tournament directors listed below and sign up today!
Jamey Burns is running the Women's "B" event in Essex (CT), Don Helm will be running his Brae Burn Men's "B" event and Dan McCormick is once again running the very popular Women's 95+ event at Myopia. Click on their names to send them an email today.

Tournament Director Jamey Burns reports that the Women's B Tournament currently has teams entered from CT, MA, RI and NY. The deadline for entries is today (Tues) and there is still room in the draw for a few more teams. Please email Jamey today!
Jamey also reports that last year, he closed off the draw at 16 teams for the Men's event as a matter of convenience for scheduling purposes since he did not have access to that many courts. He ended up turning away teams. This year, he hope to expand the tournament to 24 teams which is a real possibility based upon last season's interest. Entries for this year's event are starting to come in, so don't procrastinate! Email Jamey Burns today!

We have a very busy weekend ahead. A few of the top men's teams from the region are heading to the Sound Shore Invitational in Scarsdale, NY. Best of luck to them. Rob Durfee, tournament director for the Longmeadow (MA) Men's 95+ reports a solid draw for his event this Saturday. As of this morning he only had three spots left. Not sure how many spots are left at the RI Mixed Open this Sunday in Westerly (RI), but my guess is you better get your team entered now.
It's hard to believe, but the clock is counting down to the inaugural CT Shoreline Women's "B" tournament in Old Lyme on December 6th. Jamey a Burns is running this event. I've got a feeling the new "B" events for the women this season will be a big hit. Of course on that same date, Don Helm will be running his Brae Burn Men's "B" event. Not sure how many years Don has hosted this cornerstone tournament, but many future men's President Cuppers got their start at Don's event at Brae Burn. I hope you join me at this really fun event!

RAIN was the dominant factor at today's women's CT Classic tournament held at the Hartford Golf Club. The rain stopped long enough to get the first round matches going, although after about an hour it started to drizzle. By late morning it was pouring and the golf pro was calling to say lightning was in the area. Matches were halted and the players had an early lunch before returning to another break in the weather. The morning matches were finished and most of the afternoon matches were played before the rain started again, just in time for the finals. At least it was warm!
The newly formed team of Sheri Shea and Susan Tarzian won an exciting 3-set final, despite the weather. Michele Jellenik and Ana Brzova won the reprieve, Vermonters Leslie Potter and Knight won the consolation and Michelle Canon and Kim Mihan won the last chance.

Important Tournament Updates
I've heard from many of you on how your leagues and club events are off to a great start this season.
Sounds like our sport continues to grow in leaps and bounds. The Region 2 Tournament Directors and I worked hard over the off-season to tweak the event calendar and make it what we hope will be the best yet. The region has secured two additional National Ranking Tournaments, The Connecticut Classic in November and the Greater Boston Women's Open in December. The Connecticut Classic, men's & women's NRT event, will be hosted by the Hartford Golf Club on November 15 & 16.
Gaining two NRT events meant shifting other events around to avoid conflicts with PCQ and other NRT tournaments in the northeast. We combined the RI Men's & Women's Open (a PCQ event) to the same weekend and tried to move the Green Mountain Open to a new date. Unfortunately, conflicts in Vermont prevented the event from moving and now the RI Open & Green Mountain Open are on the same date. My hope is that a large group of non-PCQ players will smack the ball around in Vermont. Another setback came when I received word that court relocation in Nantucket hit a snag and that this years mixed event had to be cancelled. This is a really fun event and I hope you consider playing in it next year when it returns.
Hope I see you on the courts soon.
Shelter Harbor Inn to host Rhode Island Men's and Women's
The Shelter Harbor Inn will host the Rhode Island Open Men's PCQ on November 1 and Women's PCQ on November 2. Applications are available at the Shelter Harbor Inn website ( www.shelterharborinn.com ) by clicking on the "Paddle Club" link. Please contact Jim Dey at 401-322-8883 for further information.
Green Mountain Open
Sticking with the same date from last year and going with a the same venue. Norwich will host this years event with new tournament directors. It took two guys to fill the sneakers of past tournament director David Halsey. The men's event is on Saturday followed by a mixed event on Sunday.

Waveny Lodge Renovation Complete
OCTOBER 24, 2008
Waveny Lodge is located within a 250 acre park in the center of New Canaan, CT. The grounds and buildings were gifted to the Town of New Canaan by the Lapham family in the 1950’s. Waveny Lodge was originally built in the 1920’s for the superintendent of the property. Over time, it fell into serious disrepair.
In 2004, a group of platform tennis enthusiasts petitioned the Town of New Canaan to renovate the four 1970’s built public platform tennis courts located next to the senior center within the park. The Park & Recreation Commissioner suggested that the new courts be built next to the cottage and that the town might be able to put some money into the cottage so that it could be used as a paddle hut. However, the $150,000 needed to bring the building up to code was considerable less than what was needed to create a proper facility.
What followed is a story of collaboration of individuals, families, local merchants, the platform tennis community at large, community organizations and extraordinary volunteers. The result is a fantastic public platform tennis facility including an historic, unique and beautiful hut. More

Early October Update
ROB COSTER, REGION II PRESIDENT
OCTOBER 6, 2008
It's PT Time! Finally!
A nip is in the air and it's time to dust off that paddle. I hear there are several groups up & running, in fact a few of them never stopped over the summer! A lot of great stuff is ahead this season. I hope everyone gets a little more active in their platform tennis community. I can talk firsthand on how hard the American Platform Tennis Association is working to grow our sport. I hope you show your support by joining the APTA. Please pass the word to everyone you know who loves the game.
I'm very pleased to have Charlotte Gilet ( cgilet@nycap.rr.com ) back again this season heading up women's tournament play. She has worked diligently to bring "B" level events for the women in the region and we were also able to gain national ranking status for the Greater Boston Women's Open. Bill Andersen has stepped down as the men's tournament chair after many seasons. With his guidance, the Region 2 Men's President Cup team has won the Cup the past two seasons. Well done and thank you Bill! Jerry Albrikes ( mnvike@aol.com ) has offered to fill Bill's sneakers and I have gratefully accepted. I'm looking forward to working with Jerry & Charlotte for many seasons to come.
See you on the courts!
Women's Tournaments
CHARLOTTE GILET
OCTOBER 6, 2008
The Region II schedule has changed significantly, the reason being to accommodate the addition of B sponsored APTA tournaments, mitigate conflicts with other events close to our region and to generate more fun - hence Deirdre's Hartford Open is now called the CT Classic and the men will have their NRT event in Hartford that same weekend! We're trying new stuff this year and welcome feedback, as long as formative! I'd like to thank our volunteers who are running our events - Kate Rugen, Dan McCormick, Courtia Worth, Kitty Palmer, Deirdre Redden, Jamey Burns, Joan O'Connor and Sheri Shea. Without their love for the sport, time and ideas we wouldn't have a fun calendar of events.
What's even better? the APTA website! It's clean, concise and easy to navigate. Please pull out your day timers, iphones and hop on the site, check out the calendar of events and ink or type them in! Now, the only caveat with a B event is that if you have made it to a semi-final of a President Cups Qualifying (PCQ) event, you are not eligible to play in a B event. Of course, PCQ tourneys are open to anyone of any caliber and are a fantastic way to improve your play either by showing off your shots to the regions top teams or watching others plays.
Presidents Cup and Nationals, they are in Cincinnati, OH - THE LAST TIME REGION II WON PRESIDENT'S CUP WAS IN CINCINNATI! To qualify for President's Cup you must play in at least 3 Regional President Cup tourneys - most of ours are PCQs. The top five teams are determined based upon a point system, points are accrued throughout the season, we take your top 3 finishes to determine the final line up and your captain can use discretion....(lucky me!). Once the top 5 teams for our region are determined, our teams will play the top teams from each region the day before Nationals - all for the honor of hoisting the cup - it's an exhausting blast. I'm begging....I took over for Deirdre - she has a CUP on her resumes, I don't. I feel it....Cincy here we come.
Cheers!
Rally for the Cure
SHERI SHEA
OCTOBER 6, 2008
Dear Paddle Friends,
This year I plan to expand the Rally for the Cure Paddle Fundraiser to three clubs in the Hartford, CT area. I have moved up the date to coincide with October as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month (it's more appropriate). I also think it's a great way to kick off the paddle season for all the local players and clubs.
Tentatively, plans are for multiple levels of play so that there will be a fun day for everyone. No reason for anyone to miss this event. Please contact me if you would like to join us on Friday, October 17th or help us with a contribution. Every little bit helps. I can be reached at paddlemaven@sbcglobal.net
All of us have been touched in some way by breast cancer and I hope you'll share my desire to use the game we love to increase awareness and affect change.
I look forward to a great season with all of you!
