APTA Men’s Ranking Committee

Ray Costa

September 1, 2008
The Men’s Ranking Committee consists of five APTA members: Anthony Cosimano (Region 1), Ray Crosta (Region 1), Dan Mott (Region 4), John Noble (Region 5), and Fritz Odenbach (Region 4).Fritz Odenbach had chaired this committee for many years, and passed on the honor to myself last year while he was preparing for the 2008 Nationals in Rochester, NY.

Our principal objective is to seed and rank each APTA National Ranking Tournament as fairly and objectively as possible.Every tournament is assigned and ranking which can range from a 1.0 to a 4.0, with a 1.0 being the lowest ranking possible, and the Nationals being the only tournament that receives a 4.0 ranking. We, as a committee, do not prerank tournaments.Once a tournament is completed, we will compare it to other tournaments played in the same season in order to determine the proper ranking to be attached. In some cases, usually in the beginning of a season, the previous year’s results will be used as a comparison. The overall depth of a tournament is the most important criteria used to determine its ranking.

Two committee members are assigned to seed each tournament.Seeds are based on the current APTA National Ranking prior to each tournament. Our job is made easier when the teams entered have the required three tournaments played together to obtain an official ranking. However, in most tournaments, there are usually a couple of makeshift teams that play that don’t have any ranking points together. In these cases, the committee must use some subjectivity in order to seed a tournament as fairly as possible. We will look at a player’s individual points, his previous results, and past history in order to determine if and where they should be seeded. If there ever is any doubt, the committee will always favor a team that has an official ranking.

Another season is right around the corner.I look forward to seeing you all on the court!

Ray Crosta
