2017 Green Mountain Women

Victoria Cran and Sandra Duryea, both from Hamilton, Massachusetts, outlasted the women’s Friday draw for the second straight year. After winning the first set in the finals, they ended up taking the title by injury default after Tricia Wierdsma of Katonah, NY, twin and partner of Sandra Odenbach of Rochester, NY, hurt her calf. Good news—Wierdsma was given some solid PT from Tournament Director Dave Barlow, and was able to compete in the GMO Mixed on Sunday. (See Barlow’s article on Achilles Tendonitis in the second issue of Platform Tennis Magazine this season.)

2017 Green Mountain MenJulian Camachio and Max Gumport CEOs at Men’s GMO

The youngest team in the draw, Julian Camachio and Max Gumport, and by far the most discussed, battled for the Men’s Green Mountain Open title, defeating Ed Hughes and Mike McGrath, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. This was Hughes/McGrath third consecutive trip to the finals. Camachio and Gumport, graduates of and tennis teammates at Amherst, have every trick in the book, and took down last year’s winners in the second round.

Abigail Burke and Paul Wishnoff, from Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, reclaimed their title from 2013, defeating Courtney Adams and Sam Adams, of Andover, Massachusetts, in a tight match, 6-4, 6-4.

Thanks as always to Tournament Directors Dave Barlow and Todd Tyson, to volunteers Sugar Generaux, and Martha and Steve Roiter, and to the players who make this small but strong three-day event extra fun.
